New to cycle commuting?

Cycling to work is a fantastic way to get fitter, avoid traffic jams and de-stress! If you’re new to cycling to work, then the better weather is an ideal time to start. You might be worried about traffic on the road if you aren’t a regular cyclist during rush hour, and that’s a valid point. There are, however, lots of cycle lanes in towns and cities and at traffic lights you often get to be at the front in the bike boxes that are painted on the road.

You still need to keep your wits about you, but as you get more confident you will develop the sense of when, for example, a driver is about to turn without indicating. Good brakes are key here, as you can be sure of unexpected events happening in front of you, from a pedestrian walking out in front of you to a car pulling out without looking so that you can stop rapidly when needed. Cycling is about being aware of your surroundings, but it certainly keeps you focused when you are on the city roads! Key tips are to stop at traffic lights, as you don’t want to put yourself in harm’s way, and also to not be riding with a phone in your hand, as you can’t focus on the road if you are looking at a screen. Keep to the bike and bus lanes when they are available as that is the best place on the road for your two wheels.

In short, there has never been a safer time to be on the road as a cyclist so get out there and enjoy it!
